On Monday, September 8th, 2014, my boyfriend and I went to a restaurant to celebrate our two month anniversary. We decided to visit Providence as far as it is one of the most expensive, upscale, and sophisticated fine dining establishments in Los Angeles. People tend to go there in order to try out a famous three-hour testing menu. So, it was exactly what we had for our dinner. It is worth mentioning that Providence has won numerous awards as the best restaurant with delicious food, professional chefs and attentive service. Thus, the expectations were enormous.
To tell the truth, I was a little bit disappointed by the exterior, namely by the neighborhood of the building. Providence is located at 5955 Melrose Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90038. Personally, I do not like the surrounding of this restaurant because there are many apartment blocks and houses nearby. Indeed, this area does not ideally suit a high-quality restaurant. However, the spot can turn out to be quite profitable for its owners since it is quite easy to draw new audience from the dwelling areas.
Having estimated the external view of the eating place, we urged to see its interior. As we took our seats, we could clearly observe the restaurant. Suddenly, I realized that we were, probably, the only couple in our early 20s. Most people who came to dne seemed to be husbands and wives in their mid 30s or 40s. The only common thing about the visitors was that all of them were in pairs. There were no big parties. Actually, there were not more than two persons sitting at one table. Certainly, it is a kind of the restaurant where one can feel exclusive and private. Of course, it is a great advantage for those who want to feel a romantic atmosphere of the evening.
After we had examined the restaurant, the waiter finally approached our table and handed over the menu. He explained plainly the main items. Thus, there were three kinds of the tasting menu that one could try. The first variant included four appetizers, a main course, and a dessert. The second one consisted of four appetizers, a main course, and four desserts. The last menu was the largest and contained thirteen courses. Consequently, in such a case, the eating process might take three and a half hours. We preferred the second option which was the nine-course menu. Throughout the meal, the waiter presented and described every dish. Each of them was delicious and unique. It differed greatly from one’s regular food and had an exquisite flavor. Moreover, the meal tasted and looked expensive.
The full menu comprised nine lists of dishes to satisfy the whims of the most captious guest. For example, the sample menu offered the following unusual combinations of products: prawns with spring greens and fennel; sea scallop with coconut, curry, lime and mint; salmon with chanterelles and almonds, and so on. The main courses were delicately named that excited one’s curiosity. Among the most interesting titles, there were Uni Egg (Santa Barbara sea urchin hiding beneath soft scrambled eggs), Wild East Coast Fluke, Liberty Farms Duck Breast, Wild Alaskan Halibut and many others. The dishes on the complete Providence market menu cost $140. However, with wine pairing the price rises to $210. At first sight, the total amount seems to be overwhelming for the everyday meal. Nevertheless, if it is supposed to be a romantic evening, celebration or anniversary, it is worth such an overcharge.
In my opinion, Providence is a culturally significant place as far as more and more guests come there to get a new eating experience. Moreover, fine dining is currently becoming a social event in the whole Los Angeles. Nowadays, one can notice there are many food bloggers, critics, celebrity chefs and gourmets. Visit to a restaurant has grown into a special ritual. People get there not just to eat, but to communicate, taste exquisite cuisines, enjoy the beautiful scenery or have a rest. Gradually, fine dining is gaining popularity among Los Angeles inhabitants and turning into a modern trend.
